Psychology terms glossary
I am studying Psychology in socials' sciences for 2 years now. This glossary is related to my field of study. I've defined terms that we currently use in this program, to be able now to use them correctly in English when it's gonna be necessary in the future.
- cognition
- noun
- A perception, sensation, idea, or intuition resulting from the process of cognition.
- Example: Creative cognition is one inherent aspect of human cognition.

- emotion
- noun
- A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
- Example: And what it suggests is that structures of desire, EMOTION and fantasy have deep roots of some sort in the self which are not necessarily amenable in any simple way to processes of conscious rational argument.

- behavior
- noun
- The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.
- Example: Student questioning, a BEHAVIOR that provides information on how students adapt and function within the classroom, is an important part of the student learning repertoire.

- amygdala
- noun
- A roughly almond-shaped mass of gray matter inside each cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions.
- Example: The AMYGDALA regulates basic emotions such as fear, anger and craving and is affected quite early in Alzheimer's.

- noun
- An irresistible urge to behave in a certain way, especially against one's conscious wishes.
- Example: He felt a compulsion to babble on about what had happened.

- disorder
- noun
- A state of confusion.
- Example: The early stages of a mental disorder were beginning to show in the patient.

- paranoia
- noun
- The unwarranted or delusional belief that one is being persecuted, harassed, or betrayed by others, occurring as part of a mental condition.
- Example: You can't describe the PARANOIA.

- medication
- noun
- A substance used for medical treatment, especially a medicine or drug.
- Example: This will only happen, however, if such situations are approached subsequently with decreasing amounts of assistance from MEDICATION.

- noun
- Treatment intended to relieve or heal a disorder.
- Example: It is now virtually impossible to find a disorder that Cognitive - Behaviour THERAPY has not been applied to.

- dyslexia
- noun
- A condition of neurodevelopmental origin that mainly affects the ease with which a person reads, writes, and spells, typically recognized as a specific learning disorder in children.
- Example: We know that this is no easy task as evident by the number of adults who speak fluently, yet are illiterate or suffer from DYSLEXIA.

- bipolar
- noun
- A mental illness that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration.
- Example: Although it is the mood disturbance that stands out in affective psychosis, individuals who meet the criteria for either the "unipolar" or the "BIPOLAR" form (as they are sometimes called) sometimes also show features reminiscent of schizophrenia, as we shall see for several of the subjects evaluated in this book.

- noun
- A clashing or sharp disagreement (as between ideas, interests, or purposes) : mental struggle resulting from needs, drives, wishes, or demands that are in opposition or are not compatible.

- noun
- The science of measuring mental capacities and processes.
- Example: Nowadays, psychometrics has already been a hot issue in psychological research.

- introvert
- noun
- A person predominantly concerned with their own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things.
- Example: That young man is an introvert.

- introjection
- noun
- The unconscious adoption of the ideas or attitudes of others.
- Example: The family is the child's adaptive environment, and much of this world's emotional tone enters the child's inner world by introjection.

- noun
- A state of preparedness to act or to respond to a stimulus.
- fr: préparation

- stimulus
- noun
- Any object or event that elicits a sensory or behavioral response in an organism.
- Example: Books provide children with ideas and a stimulus for play.

- OCD
- noun
- Short for obsessive-compulsive disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.
- Example: OCD patients often use immature defense mechanism.

- brain
- noun
- An organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity.
- Example: We learnt about the structure of the brain today.

- An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
- Example: Owen has a phobia about snakes.
